Tips on how to gift on a dime

Unless you have been living on the moon or in the deep wilderness you know that we are all living in the recession nightmare.  Christmas looms large in front of us and if you are anything like me you love to create Christmas magic each year.  Unfortunately that usually means that you need money...something that most of us do not have this year.  So you have to get creative and you have to get organized and you have to be informed.  One of the greatest sources for prices is the Internet...especially if you are looking to buy large items...comparison shop the ads and the Internet before you purchase.  Do your homework - know exactly what you want and know the prices offered in other stores and websites...be sure that you are informed as to what to expect in the product that you are purchasing.

Another great source for great buys is in stores that offer discount prices. Stores like Dollar General, Family Dollar, Deals, the Christmas Tree Shops and especially Big Lots offer a wide variety of great items from toys to appliances. Many are top name brand items with discount prices. My favorite of these is Big Lots http://www.biglots.com/Default.aspx . They sell everything:  food, furniture, appliances, toys, seasonal decorations and items, gifts, jewelry, video games for all the consoles, electronics--you name it they got it.  And if you are really looking to save and plan on taking a trip to the state of Delaware--they just opened one in New Castle(right over the bridge from Jersey and a hop from both PA and MD.  Why is this so special?  THERE IS NO SALES TAX IN DELAWARE!  So off the top you will be saving 7%.  Deals http://www.deals-stores.com/, a newer store from Dollartree offers upscale Dollar Store items along with a few higher priced items. Most items are between $5 and $1. The other stores I listed also have some great buys for many items. Last year I got a Single Cup desk coffee maker for $7 at Family Dollar and have found those special touches in stores both Dollar General http://www.dollargeneral.com/Pages/index.aspx and Family Dollar(http://www.familydollar.com/Pages/Home.aspx. The Christmas Tree Shop http://www.christmastreeshops.com/ is a great place for everything but especially gifts and housewares.  They have great bargains on furniture, domestics and housewares items such as cookware and dishes.  They have this food section that will give you great options for building that special stocking at a great price.  If you are looking for that special gift for that special person but you are not sure what it is--peruse this store and I guarantee you will find it and not spend a lot on it.

Just like Santa you have to make a list and check it twice.  Organization is vital to saving money.  Know what you are buying for whom you are buying and where you are buying.  Try to have back up purchase points in case the best price is sold out.  When you get the gift keep track of where you hide it ( I lose at least one gift every year when I do not stay organized.).

Also don't be afraid to get creative.  I started a tradition years ago when I was a kid and didn't have a lot of money.  Every year I make each of my parents a gift.  It is not hard to do and it doesn't have to be crafty.  There are several options you can choose here.  Some of the gifts I have given them over the years are:  hand painted ceramic music box, cheese cake, toy soldier decoration made from flower pots stacked on each other, work vouchers good for various jobs around their house, a pillow, cookies, homemade bread, printed sheets...the sky is the limit.  Use your imagination.

Just keep my tips in mind as you deal with the coming shopping and gifting season and have a great time.

The Walmart secret is out for Black Friday

Wal-Mart's Black Friday 2010 ad: Electronics top deals

By Parija Kavilanz, senior writerCNNmoney.com

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Wal-Mart's highly awaited Black Friday ad promises hot deals on high-definition TVs, Blu-ray players, laptops and holiday gift favorites such as toys and DVDs, according to a copy of the retailer's circular obtained by CNNMoney.com on Saturday.
The world's largest retailer promised last month that it would do whatever was necessary to be the most competitive on prices during the year-end holiday shopping season.

A quick look through Wal-Mart's circular shows that the discounter is ready to take on its rivals, especially in the key electronics and toys categories.
According to the circular, Wal-Mart will unveil some Black Friday deals in stores on midnight -- while other, juicier "doorbuster" bargains will be available while supplies last from 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving.
A company spokesman confirmed that most Wal-Mart stores will open at midnight that day.

"Customers can avoid standing in the cold waiting for stores to open and get an early jump on the season's best savings," he said. The early sales will focus in items like toys, pajamas, and small kitchen appliances, with the electronics and HDTV deals kicking in at 5 a.m., he said.

Among the doorbuster deals the circular advertises: the 32-inch Emerson 720p LCD HDTV for $198; 42-inch Emerson 1080p LCD HDTV for $398; 42-inch LG 1080p LCD HDTV for $478; Magnavox Wi-Fi Blu-ray player (with a $10 credit for on-demand movie service Vudu) for $68; 8GB iPod Touch for $225, plus a $50 Wal-Mart gift card; Kodak C183 14-megapixel 3-inch LCD digital camera for $59; and an HP 15.6-inch 250 GB hard drive laptop for $298.
Doorbusters also include $7 and $8 videogames, more than 90 DVD movie titles for $1.96, and Blu-ray disc movies for $5 and $10.
Other deals that kick off at midnight on Black Friday include Zhu Zhu Pet toy hamsters for $4 each, $5 Barbie dolls, children's clothes for $4, Rival brand slow cookers and hand mixers for $2.97, Hamilton Beach slow cookers and coffeemakers for $9.97 each, and Oster Electric griddles or waffle makers also priced at $9.97 each.
Additionally, deals available only on Saturday include Sony's 46-inch 1080p LCD HDTV for $698.

How can you do Christmas without money?

In today's financial climate Christmas is going to be a hard thing to budget without some alternatives.  Money is scarce in most households and folks are scrambling to make it all work.  Of course there are great sales and coupons that assist in saving money but how about an alternative to money altogether.  There are a few companies out there that offer you points for utilizing their products.  I have introduced the reward points from Pamper and Huggies.  When I have them I will share them with you but these are slow (unless you are using diapers).  Just recently I came upon a couple that might be even quicker and more workable.  These companies only ask that you use their search sites and you are rewarded in return for your usage.

Bing.com is one of these companies that offer these rewards.  What is special about their rewards is that they offer a great selection of items that you can get with your points: anything from gift cards to computers.  So sign up for Bing rewards and get started today.

Did I see Christmas stuff in the stores?

Where did the year go...didn't I just finish shopping for Christmas?  Ah, but here it is - almost Halloween.  November is peeking over the shoulder of October.  Where, you ask, am I going with this?  Well I got my first notice about the Black Friday sales the other day and since they have been pouring in.  It is a definite advantage to have knowledge of what will be on sale on the best day of shopping of the year before everyone else.  Planning is key to getting those rock bottom prices on Black Friday.  I will pass along any information that I receive and try to steer you in the right directions.

Black Friday is the best day to acquire big items such as Electronics and Computers but it is also a great day for clothing and toys.  So check out what I have gotten so far and good luck shopping.

Sears is having a pre-Black Friday sale on October 29 and 30th check out the ad attached:

Joy's Freebies

I recently had one of my followers in Facebook remind me about bogus freebies.  By bogus I mean they say they are free and really they are cheap tricks to get you to subscribe to their site.  Examples of these are offers that look too good to be true: like gift cards and computers.  Too good to be true!  These so called freebies will lead you through a ridiculous page after page of info grabbing and phishing with questions.  They will eventually lead you to a page that you will be expected to give your Cell Phone or other financial info like credit cards or bank info.  DO NOT EVER GIVE ANY OF THESE 3 TO PEOPLE ON THE INTERNET.  If you do share your Cell, for instance, there will be some arbitrary charge on your cell bill the next time you receive it...

Now please rest easy about any FREEBIE I post on my blog.  I personally apply for every freebie that I do share and have received almost all of them in a timely manner.  I will never post the bogus or impossible type freebies because frankly if it is too much for me to finish I would never pass it on!

FYI buying meat? Let me give you a few tips.

In these tough times it gets harder and harder to include meat with your meals.  I swear I am growing feathers I have eaten so much chicken.  Pork was an option until just recently.  Not sure why but the price of pork has slowly climbed be a middle sister to Beef.  Ahhhhhh beef, the late great beef...I miss you.  Prices of red meat has also sky rocketed!  Well let me tell you a little secret...

...Stores like Shoprite and Acme discount meats everyday.  What is that, you say?  Thank god that these stores and others discount the meats that are approaching their sell by date.  They would rather sell it to you for a discount than throw it away.  The sell by date is just what it says...they have to sell the meat by that date.  It is not an expiration date!!!  All you have to do is put the meat in the freezer and it will last for up to 2 months.

The other day I picked up a repackaged pack of summer sausage at Shoprite.  It had 14 summer sausages with bacon and only cost me $2.36.  The stores discount in a number of ways.  Stores like Acme put coupons on the meats while my Shoprite repackages and discounts the price.  I have saved on everything from chicken to beef using these discounts.  Different stores use different methods but just about all of them discount meats.

I look for white coupons at Acme, red and yellow stickers at Shoprite and coupons at Pathmark.  I find that it is easy to find pork at Shoprite, just about everything at Acme and  chicken most of the time at Pathmark...just thought you would like to know.

I hope that you can start saving, too.

Shopping time again. Did you know...

Did you know...

...that coupons are available all over the web?  There are several companies that feature coupons of all kinds - all you have to do is sign up for their email announcements.  http://www.coupons.com/ is one of my favorites. They usually feature up to 6 pages of manufacturer and local coupons.  Another fave of mine is http://www.coolsavings.com/ who offers coupons, recipes, freebies, and samples.  A new type of coupon loads the coupon right onto your store saving card...for instance at Shoprite you would click on the coupons to have them loaded onto your Shoprite savings card and when you swipe the card they come off at the end.  This company Cellfire http://www.shoprite.com/Cnt/Cellfire.html (this is the link to the Shoprite page but I do know that there are other grocery stores that use this option too - go onto your local grocer's website and check it out)

...that most companies have websites that feature the products that you buy.  Recipes and coupons are available on most of these websites and are usually multi-print(can be printed more than once)

...you can save the money you might spend on those recipe books at the check-out.   The recipes in these books are all online.  Companies like Betty Crocker http://www.bettycrocker.com/recipes , Pillsbury http://www.pillsbury.com/recipes/ , Kraft http://www.kraftrecipes.com/ , and taste of home http://www.tasteofhome.com/ all feature the recipes from the books we waste money on.  Taste of Home is especially wonderful because they feature the recipes from all of their publications on their website.  So if you are browsing through one of those books the next time that you are waiting to check-out and see something you like:  look at the back of the book to see what company is featured in the book and google them on the web!

...sometimes you can use a coupon from one product from a specific manufacturer on another product that they manufacture.  An example would be using a Hefty cup coupon on Hefty plates.  I really can't tell you what coupons will work like this - the only way to find out is to try it.  If it works you SAVE; if not play dumb-LOL.

...I have never had a problem using any kind of coupon in the self checkout--what I mean by this is the machine doesn't balk at a printed coupon like some cashiers do...or say that the coupon is expired.

...some grocery stores will take recently expired coupons.  Usually a week is the limit though.

...male cashiers don't usually pick apart your coupons...wink wink.

...that if you are pleasant to your cashier they will usually give you a break with coupons that they wouldn't normally accept.

Ok, ok so a person might pass a few expired coupons from time to time but most of the time I do the right thing.  Coupons are a lot of work but they are soooooooo worth the savings at the end.  I used to live with Mr. Scrooge.  He believed that I should be able to shop for a family of 3 with $50 per week.  So I had to get good with coupons and specials.  And guess what I made the quota every week and had enough to splurge on some extras, too.  So give it a try.  Try my tips out, what have you got to lose?  If they work you save; if not play stupid.  Anything is worth a try.

Shop on a Dime: Great places to visit on a dime

Shop on a Dime: Great places to visit on a dime: "Today I was thinking to myself what can I write about in the blog? Hmmmmm.....As a mother who had to make a little money go a long way, goi..."

Great places to visit on a dime

Today I was thinking to myself what can I write about in the blog?  Hmmmmm.....As a mother who had to make a little money go a long way, going places was quite difficult, but not impossible.  There is a lot of free experiences that you can share with your kids.  The first place that will give your little guys a distinct thrill is the park...any park with a playground will do.  Little people have caniptions over the park.  They love running around the playground and getting dirty.  This is the one place that all kids become instant friends and imagination runs wild.  Bring a book, a picnic lunch, bug spray and enjoy your day.

Now if you are looking for other things to do you might have to do a little investigating about your surroundings...I happen to be very lucky to have been born in Jersey...so close to the beach and Philadelphia right down the street.  If you are also fortunate to be from this area you know about the many great attractions that await you and your children.  Philadelphia offers so much to keep a person busy... In the historic district you can visit the Mint, Betsy Ross' house http://www.betsyrosshouse.org/ and the liberty bell http://www.nps.gov/inde/ all for free.  Outside of the Betsy Ross House there is a stage where local residents tell anyone who listens what it was like to live in Philadelphia in the 1700's.  I had a great time watching the action.  My little boy used to love to go with my mom to Penns Landing in the evenings to listen to the free Big Band concerts...did you know they have free concerts all the time...check out their website:  http://www.delawareriverevents.com/index.php?module=delawareriverevents&image=49) for more information.

Now if the city isn't your cup of tea there are many things to do in and around the country.  There are many free attractions available in your area.  Many states and counties have set up some sort of Children's Museums and most are very inexpensive.  In South Jersey there are 2 that I know of.  One is the Children's Discovery Museum (http://www.discoverymuseum.com/geninfo.asp) in Cherry Hill, NJ.  A place for your child's imagination to run wild with giant bubbles that encase their body, a full size diner to play in and sooooooooooo much more.  (I had a great time playing here)  In Lumberton (http://www.imaginethatmuseum.com/) NJ there is another Children's Museum which also caters to the imagination of you and your child.  Deleware just finished their Children's Museum (http://www.delawarechildrensmuseum.org/) located down on the Riverfront in Wilmington there are many other attractions to keep you and your family busy (http://www.riverfrontwilm.com/) .

If is a zoo you are looking for there are a few inexpensive zoos for your enjoyment.  In NJ again, they have two small zoos one in Bridgeton (http://ja-jp.facebook.com/pages/Bridgeton-NJ/Cohanzick-Zoo/67010592699) the Conhanzick Zoo and another in Cape May Courthouse - the Cape May County Zoo ( http://www.co.cape-may.nj.us/cit-e-access/webpage.cfm?tid=5&tpid=442 )/  I am partial to the Cape May County Zoo because I played there when I was a child but both are great for a good day trip.  Bring a picnic lunch and have fun.  I would be remisce if I did not mention the zoo that now sits in my backyard of my new state:  the Brandywine Zoo ( http://www.brandywinezoo.org/ ).  Intent on education and fun they run many programs inside and outside the zoo.  The other day as I was leaving my neighborhood library I was walking beside a hedgehog and some other animals that they were featuring at the county library.  Did you know that hedgehogs smell like hoagies?  Not a huge zoo but nice just the same, nestled in one of the most beautiful parks I have ever seen with babbling brooks and trees.

In sharing this subject, I am constantly brought back to my childhood.  We didn't have much as kids but we really didn't care because my parents made sure we had lots of love and great memories.  Some of those great memories didn't cost my parents anything but the gas and a picnic lunch.  Mom and dad took us to local factories on tours.  We toured Strohmen bread, 7up bottling company and the original Hershey factory.  Learned how to make pretzels in the basement of the original Sturgis Pretzels and saw tons of hanging, curing Lebanon Balogna in Lebanon, PA.  Hours and hours of playing in the Cape May county Park and zoo, water ice and a trip to the Cross Keys airport to watch the planes,  standing on the roof of the Philly airport in our jammies watching jets take off and land...sorry for the trip down memory lane but can you see how she took a little money and made it go a long way?  Use your imagination and great memories can grow for you and your family, too.
The best way to find great places to visit is to get on your computer and google what you are looking for.

If you have any great places you would like to share - please feel free to share them, too.

Where did the summer go?  The commercials on television and the weekly circulars are screaming--SUMMER IS OVER- TIME TO GO BACK TO SCHOOL.  Oh, the dreaded back to school shopping, how it has changed since I was a kid.  All my mom had to buy us was a few new clothes and some new shoes--perferably something in style and not bobo sneakers.  If you were lucky you got a new lunchbox,  a notebook and some pencils.  If you were really lucky, a pencil box, too.  Well that has all changed in today's world.  Schools barely have the money to buy books let alone basic school supplies so the burden now falls on the parent.  Schools print lists of required materials and distribute them to the local stores like Walmart and Staples.  Shoppers find themselves accosted with the lists as soon as they walk across the threshold of these stores.  Back to school can be a very costly deal.

I noticed this past Sunday as I looked through the Sunday circulars that there are a few deals out there.  RoseArt crayons and markers can be had at a relatively low price.  Wirebound notebooks are relatively cheap in stores from Shoprite to Staples.  It is the large items that can really tax a parent.  The older your child is; the more you understand this statement.  Elementary students get away with just stationary items whereas the High School Student requires much larger and costly electronic items.  Many School Districts are requiring such goodies as Scientific Calculators and Laptops.  I don't know how the average family can afford it.

At the elementary level, I recommend that the consumer check all the Sales Circulars carefully, comparing the deals.  Places like Walmart, Staples and Waldgreens (Happy Harrys - in DE) usually have at least one or two great deals per week up to the first day of school.  Last week I bought my grandson (age 3) a box of fat crayons for $ .19 at Waldgreens ... a few weeks ago Staples sold the bic stick pens for a penny.  Walmart and K-Mart are usually the best place to find inexpensive notebooks, backpacks and lunch bags.

Now for those more expensive items, the first advise I have is:  do your homework before you buy.  Look first.  The operative word here is LOOK.  Do not buy without doing some research first.  I had to replace my laptop last fall when mine was stolen.  The first thing I did was decide what I needed in the laptop...memory, accessories and so on.  Then I visited a couple stores:  Best Buy and Comp USA to compare the different brands.  I asked friends which brands they recommended and I googled Consumer Reports and a few PC magazines to get their recommendations.  While I was in the stores I took notes as to the prices of the laptops that I liked the most.  Next back to the computer, google CHEAP LAPTOPS or something similar.  You will find a large list of online stores that will give you the best prices.  Compare what you want with what they have to offer...this takes time.  TAKE THE TIME.  It will save you money now and money in the long run.  Make sure that you are getting the most for your money.  Two of my favorite online stores are:  Comp USA and Tiger Direct( http://www.tigerdirect.com/email/WEM2364.asp?SRCCODE=TIGFACEBK&cm_mmc_o=m21CjCd-2HPRRsCjC2zF5zbTECjCmAFFwyjKwzkl ).  You want your laptop to last longer than a year and believe me there are some out there that are not worth the money you pay for them.

Thoughout this joyous season-back to school shopping---lol, I will try to hook you up with a few deals to make your ordeal go a little easier.

I promised you that I would give you links for printable coupons...here is a new one that I just found:

some cool deals

Setting up this whole blogging thing has been a real experience...I can't believe that I am doing this. Been doing a little surfing this morning and I thought that since I found a couple offers, I would get them out there for anyone that might be interested. Now I don't know who might be getting this blog at this point - you know just starting and everything - but just in case I will try to post a few each day.

First I found this website that will give you a free green bag for saving veggies- http://www.thegreengenius.com/treehead/index.php  Sent for it this morning, can't wait.

And did you know that Kraft has a website that sends you samples of the new items they will be bringing to the market?  Well they do.  I became a member about 2 weeks ago and since have received free Mayo samples, tea, dressing, and now the new mac-n-cheese.  Click on this link  http://www.kraftfirsttaste.com/  and join in on the fun!

Grocery shopping hints

Today is finish the shopping list day.  WHAT?!  I know that is what you are saying to yourself.  Well for me the weekly shopping list is a job...part time but still a job.  In order to get the most for my money it usually can take me anywhere from 3 hours to a day to finish the list.  I honestly don't think that you want to spend that much time but I can give you a few pointers that will help you in your weekly grocery shopping experience.

1. Coupons are a great savings...I know they are a pain to deal with but I manage to save a lot of money with coupons each shopping trip and I can't tell you how gratifying it is to get something for free.

2.  Stock up when you can...In other words, grab as many as you can store of items when you find them at a really good price.  An example would be say you enjoy Kraft Mac n cheese...the local Walmart is selling them for $ .33 per box.  That means for a little more than a dollar (the price on 1 box at most stores) you are getting 3.  I would get $ 5.00 worth and store them.  You may be spending a little extra this shopping trip but you will be saving over the next few because you won't have to buy them at full price.

3. Don't be afraid to visit more than one store when you shop...quite often the great sale prices are not at the store with the lower regular prices.

4. Get to know your stores...the more information you know about your stores the better deals you can get.  What I mean by this is all grocery, drug, department and discount chain stores are not created equal.  The more educated you are about the store - the better your decision making process will be.  So when you are walking through a store and come upon a clearance rack you will know whether that yellow tag is truly a bargain.  BEWARE OF BOGUS CLEARANCE TAGS.  Stores will call something clearance but it is not always a bargain!  BEWARE WHEN YOU SHOP AT A DOLLAR STORE.  Although there are bargains at the dollar store, there are also other items that you can get at another store for less...a lot less.

5. Compare all the store circulars.  If you are grocery shopping don't forget about the drug stores and discount chains.  Many include at least 1 page of grocery items with each sale.

6. Combine any of the above for maximum value.

Welcome to my blog

Hello everyone!  My name is Joy and this is a completely new experience for me...never had my own blog before.  After years of squeezing a dime out of my budget to buy clothing, food or just about anything, I have gotten good at saving money when I shop.  Yes i was married to the man who taught Scrooge to be cheap!  Taught myself to buy alot with little money.  Holidays with little or no money!

I thought that maybe I could share my experiences and help others to save too.  I will share websites, coupons sites, local circulars and even some freebie offers of which you can participate.  I welcome your question and invite your input.  I want to help you be able to buy more and spend less.  If we work together towards this goal we all win.  This becomes expecially important in the times in which we live...as the recession continues it gets harder and harder to stretch your money just to survive, so every dime counts...hopefully I can help you save some with my blog.
